Medium Pressure Domestic Meter Maintenance and Replacements

If your property is connected to a medium pressure gas utility network operated by GTC, we have an obligation to undertake safety maintenance on your gas meter and regulator, free of charge.

If you have received a letter from GTC regarding essential maintenance on your gas meter installation and would like to discuss your availability for this work to be carried out, please contact us on gas.scheduling@gtc-uk.co.uk or by telephone between 8.30am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday on 01359 308103. You will receive correspondence from us or our appointed contractors to advise when we will be working in your area this year but if the date offered is not convenient, please contact us to re-arrange.

GTC operates the gas networks and meter assets of GTC Pipelines Ltd (GPL), Independent Pipelines Limited (IPL) and Quadrant Pipelines Limited (QPL).  Established in 1995, we are the UK’s leading independent utility infrastructure networks provider. As Ofgem licence holders and operating with industry approved Lloyds accreditations we meet the highest levels of service and safety.

GTC own and operate the gas pipes and meter installation that supply your premises and are therefore known as a ‘Gas Transporter’ and ‘Meter Equipment Manager’. You do not pay your gas bill to GTC.
GTC are required to maintain our equipment under the Gas Safety Installation and Use Regulations. As the pressure in the gas network that transports gas to your home is medium pressure, the maintenance requirements are outlined in British Standard 6400-2. The regulator is exchanged every 10 years, and a visual inspection is undertaken every 5 years.
A regulator on a gas meter regulates the pressure before passing through the gas meter and into your home.
The work is free of charge.
Please pass this letter on to your Landlord/Managing Agent as soon as possible and ask them to contact us.
No, we will not be installing a smart meter, we are only inspecting the gas meter currently installed at your property.

5 Year Domreg FAQs

The inspection will be completed by one of our qualified GTC engineers or Contractors, Scotia Gas Care or Universal Gas Solutions. We or our Contractor will write to you and provide a date for the inspection.
If the meter is easily accessible, you do not need to be home when we attend. However, if you would like to make an appointment, please contact us to arrange a convenient date. If the meter is not accessible, for example, it is behind a locked gate, please ensure you are at home on the date provided or contact us to arrange a convenient date.
The engineer will knock on your door on arrival to let you know they are at your property. They will provide you will full identification. They will photograph the gas meter and will do the following:
  • Check the operating pressure & safety devices
  • Alteration to the vent tube on the regulator to a compliant position if required
  • Emergency Control Valve handle exchange if required
  • Install labels if required
  • Notify you if any unsafe situations are identified and provide you with information on remediations required
Please note none of these actions will interrupt your gas supply. If on inspection, we find the gas meter at your property is not our asset or has been exchanged by another Meter Equipment Manager then we will not be responsible for completing this inspection and we will not continue with the works.
If no unsafe situations are identified, then your gas supply will not be interrupted.

Unsafe Situations

If our engineers encounter a meter installation that is unsafe in accordance with the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure, they shall classify the unsafe situation as Immediately Dangerous or At Risk as appropriate. Where applicable a warning notice will be issued to you, and this may result in your gas supply being turned off.

An example of an At Risk unsafe situation is as follows:

Outlet supply pipework leaving the rear of a cavity/built in meter box.

If our engineer identifies this during the inspection, we will be required to raise a warning notice, with your permission turn off your gas supply and inform you of what action needs to be undertaken to ensure the continued safe conveyance of gas.
