Heat
The Future Homes Standard is expected to end the use of gas for heating new homes, by 2025. GTC is ideally placed to support house builders in the migration from gas-fired heating to zero-carbon solutions.
Government heat strategy has three broad strands: electrification; greater use of heat networks; and use of hydrogen. We deliver and own utility infrastructure across the UK. We are ready to support house builders in the energy transition.
- We have a well-established electricity business to deliver electrification, for those opting for on-plot heat-pump solutions
- Our district heat business, Metropolitan, already constructs, owns and operates district heat networks
- Our gas business has networks that connect over 1.5m properties and is ready for the future conversion for use of hydrogen
We believe hydrogen will initially support the transport and industrial sectors and will then be used to supply heat to existing homes. For new homes from 2025, we offer two solutions, with a site heat network or a heat pump in each home.
Heat Pumps
As part of the Future Homes Standard, new-build homes will have better thermal efficiency with a lower heat demand. Air Source Heat Pumps in each home will provide heat and hot water, using a water cylinder. Heat pumps along with electric vehicle (EV) charging will increase electricity demand, which might need a larger site electricity network.
Smart technology solutions and integration of Photo Voltic’s (PV), batteries and thermal stores will reduce this impact and lower the annual cost for homeowners. We are already developing our smart heat pump model
District Heat Networks
GTC offers district heating networks as the other option. We already own and operate heat networks and we have built on this experience to offer a cost-effective heat network for low-density sites. The next generation heat network uses centralised heat pumps and a thermal store to supply a plastic heat network. It is very similar to our current gas solution. It also removes the need for a water cylinder in each home.
Our heat network solution is scalable. We are also working on the smart model, where energy storage is managed at the site level, removing the need for batteries and PV cells in the home.
