Delivering a Net Zero Carbon Future

GTC has designed and delivered an innovative Community Heat Hub at Westland Heath – an efficient and sustainable solution that supports the UK’s transition to a net zero carbon future. Traditionally, heat networks have been used in high-density urban developments, but GTC’s approach enables this technology to be successfully deployed in low-density housing schemes, setting a new standard for the industry.

The Community Heat Hub features large air-source heat pumps, which extract heat from the air and distribute it through a highly insulated network of pipes to homes and community buildings. The solution significantly reduces carbon emissions from day one, achieving a 75-80% reduction compared to conventional gas-heated homes.

  • Community Heat Hub supplying low-carbon heat and hot water to 950 homes and a new school
  • Fully integrated utility infrastructure including heat, electricity, water, and fibre
  • Smart-grid-ready technology designed to keep energy costs low for residents
  • Ready for the Future Homes Standard and transition to net zero

Future Homes Standard-Ready

GTC’s Community Heat Hub provides a ready-made solution meeting the Future Homes Standard (FHS), ensuring compliance with new regulations and significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Building Regulations Part L mandates that all new domestic dwellings achieve a 75-80% emissions reduction. GTC’s heat network at Westland Heath achieves these targets from day one, providing homeowners with a future-proof heating solution that is reliable, efficient, and sustainable.

Additionally, GTC’s solution is fully Future Homes Standard-ready, making it the ideal choice for developers and homeowners looking for a seamless, scalable transition to low-carbon heating.

Reliable, Low-Carbon Heating Made Easy

The Community Heat Hub consists of large air-source heat pumps that generate low-carbon heat, which is then distributed through a network of insulated pipes.

  • Each home has a Heat Interface Unit (HIU) that functions like a traditional boiler but without the need for gas
  • Residents enjoy hassle-free maintenance of the network and HIU, included in a simple community heat charge
  • Metropolitan, GTC’s sister company, operates and manages the network, providing fair, transparent billing and dedicated customer support. From 2026, heat networks will be regulated by Ofgem, offering homeowners the same protections as traditional gas and electricity consumers
  • Metropolitan’s Price Promise ensures homeowners never pay more than they would for an individual heat pump, with typical savings of up to 20% on heating costs

Smart-Grid-Ready for the Future

The Community Heat Hub is not just about heating – it’s a smart energy solution that supports the evolving needs of the electricity grid. The system includes large thermal stores that allow energy to be generated and stored when electricity prices are low. This flexibility reduces the cost of generating heat, keeping household bills lower and easing demand on the national grid.

As we move towards the Future Homes Standard in 2025, GTC’s Community Heat Hub offers an innovative solution for sustainable home heating. This approach, previously used in high-density developments, now provides community heating for family homes, setting a new benchmark for energy-efficient living.
