WORKING SAFELY NEAR
OUR UTILITY NETWORKS

At GTC, safety is at the heart of everything we do. If you’re planning any construction, excavation, or groundwork near our infrastructure – gas, electricity, water, wastewater, fibre, or heat – you must ensure you follow the HSE HSG47 Guidance for working safely near utilities, keeping people safe and protecting vital services.

Our Plant Enquiry System is a fast and simple way to check how our networks might impact your planned project, with all the information you need to work safely before you break ground.

CHECK BEFORE YOU DIG

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Make sure you always follow the industry guidelines and practices for safe digging around utilities and working around our assets.

Follow HSE Guidance

When working near utilities or around networks, it is vital that you adhere to HSE Guidance.

Maintain safe clearance distances

Use safe digging techniques and avoid mechanical excavation within 500mm of a known utility.

Request and review GTC network plans

Use our Plant Enquiry Service to find up-to-date GTC network plans for underground utility safety.

No restriction to GTC assets

Do not build over or restrict access to any GTC assets including pipes, cables, substations and access covers.

Locating equipment and hand-dug trial holes

Use pipe and cable locating equipment (such as CAT & Genny) and hand-dug trial holes to confirm positions prior to commencing works and check throughout ongoing works.

Reporting damage

Report all damage, no matter how small it may appear, immediately using the GTC Emergency numbers shown below depending on utility impacted.
