PRIORITY SUPPORT

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A GAS OUTAGE?

Your safety, and the safety of our teams, is always our top priority. We work closely with national and local Gas Distribution Networks – including Cadent, SGN, Wales & West and Northern Gas Networks – to keep you safe and restore your gas supply as quickly as possible. Restoring multiple gas supplies must be carried out in line with strict safety regulations, so the process can take time.

Here’s what typically happens when a gas incident or gas outage is reported:

01

ENGINEERS SENT

Engineers are sent to site to investigate and make the area safe.

02

TURNING THE GAS OFF

We may need to turn off the gas at your Emergency Control Valve (ECV), usually near your meter. Please do not do this unless asked to.

03

REPAIRS

Repairs are carried out and supply is restored gradually.

04

TURNING THE GAS BACK ON

Our engineers will visit to safely restore your gas and appliances – some homes may come back on before others.

05

MISSED OUR VISIT?

If you missed our visit, call 01359 240363 (Option 1) to arrange for us to return.

06

AFTER THE INCIDENT

We’ll assess how long you were affected and write to eligible customers about compensation (GSOS payments). You can find out more about compensation here.

PLANNED MAINTENANCE INTERRUPTIONS

Sometimes we need to turn off gas supplies to carry out essential maintenance. If your home is affected, we’ll always let you know in advance and keep you updated. You’ll receive a letter with details of the planned work and start date.

If you’d like more information, please contact us at [email protected] or call 01359 240363 (Option 1).

If your gas is currently off due to planned works, please don’t try to turn it back on yourself.

Our engineers will safely restore your supply once all external maintenance is complete.

BE PREPARED FOR A GAS OUTAGE

Gas supplies are usually very reliable, but it’s always a good idea to be prepared. Simple steps – like servicing your boiler regularly, having a carbon monoxide alarm, and keeping extra blankets or easy-to-cook meals on hand – can make things much easier if your supply is interrupted. See our tips and advice on how to be prepared in all seasons.

FLOODING AND GAS SAFETY

Flooding can be dangerous for gas appliances and pipework. Knowing what to do before, during, and after a flood will help keep you and your home safe. Always put safety first – never try to use appliances or meters that may have been damaged by water.

Before a Flood

Every building is different, so it’s important to get advice from a Gas Safe registered engineer. They will perform an assessment of the property (including its gas appliances, pipework and any flooding risks).

During a Flood

Turn off your gas at the Emergency Control Valve (ECV if it is safe to do so. Do not touch the meter if it’s underwater or in a cellar. Turn off all appliances before leaving.

After a Flood

If you smell gas or have low pressure, call 0800 111 999. Then call GTC on 01359 240363 (Option 1) for safe reconnection. If water has entered your pipes, you’ll need a Gas Safe engineer to check your system.
