EMERGENCY CONTACTS

PREPARING FOR A POWER CUT

Power cuts and gas outages are rare, but when they do happen, being prepared can make all the difference. Although we work hard to keep your energy flowing, it’s always a good idea to plan ahead – particularly during periods of extreme weather.

Storms, flooding, heatwaves and freezing temperatures can sometimes affect gas and electricity networks, causing temporary interruptions to your supply. High winds, lightning and increased demand during very hot or cold weather can all place additional pressure on energy infrastructure.

On this page, you’ll find practical power cut advice.  Simple steps can help you and your household stay safe, comfortable and prepared.

EXTRA SUPPORT FOR MEDICAL NEEDS

PETS AND LIVESTOCK

Don’t forget about your animals – they may need a little extra care during an outage:

  • Make sure pets have plenty of water and a safe, warm space.
  • Fish and reptiles can usually cope for 2-3 hours without power.
  • For longer outages, wrap tanks in blankets or use battery backup heaters and filters.

BEING PREPARED FOR A GAS OUTAGE

Gas supplies are very reliable, but in rare cases they can be disrupted. Here’s how to be ready, especially during cold weather.

BOILER SERVICE

Service your boiler and appliances regularly – call 0800 408 5500 or visit the Gas Safe Register for professional help.

CARBON MONOXIDE

Use a carbon monoxide alarm – test it regularly and check the expiry date.

METER LOCATION

Know where your gas meter and pipes are – if frozen, gently warm the area with warm water or a hot water bottle.

KEEPING WARM

Layer up and keep warm – extra blankets, warm clothing, and hot water bottles can help.

STAYING FED

Store ready-to-eat or easy-to-cook meals in case you cannot use your cooker.

CAREFUL PLANNING

If using electric heaters or cookers, limit non-essential electricity use to avoid overloading the network.

BE WINTER READY

BOILERS

  • Service your boiler before winter begins.
  • Prevent frozen pipes: check pipe insulation and know where your meter is located.
  • If frozen, gently warm the area – never use direct heat like a blowtorch.
  • Keep a supply of food that doesn’t require electricity or gas to prepare.
  • Stay in one heated room and keep doors closed to conserve warmth.

MEDICATION

Have an emergency plan and make sure your healthcare provider knows what equipment you rely on.

  • Keep cool packs ready if your medicine needs refrigeration.
  • Ask your GP or NHS 111 for advice on safe storage during outages.

HEATING SYSTEMS

  • Boilers and heat pumps may stop working during a power cut.
  • Once power is restored, check and reset heating timers.

FRIDGES & FREEZERS

  • Keep doors closed to preserve food for as long as possible.

SAFETY FIRST, ALWAYS

  • Never use BBQs, camping stoves, or portable heaters indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

STAY COOL AND SAFE

  • Drink plenty of water – avoid alcohol and caffeine in extreme heat.
  • Close curtains or blinds to keep rooms cooler.
  • Use fans wisely – don’t overload sockets or extension leads.
  • Check on vulnerable neighbours and relatives, especially older adults or those with medical needs.
  • Cook early in the day or prepare cold meals to avoid adding heat indoors.
  • Stay indoors during peak sun hours, usually between 11 am and 3 pm.

PREPARE FOR SUMMER STORMS

  • Charge devices and power banks before the weather changes.
