Turning Your Gas Off Safely

This page contains information on how to turn your gas supply off safely. If there is an incident on the gas network, the gas supply to your property will need to be turned off to ensure your safety. Please watch the below film for guidance on how to do this.

How to turn your gas supply off

If you live in a flat or an apartment, or occupy an industrial or commercial premises, please do not attempt to turn off your gas supply. Instead contact one of our onsite representatives who will arrange for an engineer to visit you as soon as possible.

If you live in a house or bungalow, firstly, turn off all your gas appliances, including gas hobs, boilers, and fires.

You’ll need to turn off your gas supply at the meter. It is likely on the outside of your property in wall mounted box or a semi submerged box in the ground. If not, your meter could be located within your home or inside your garage.

If your meter is housed in a meter box, you may need a key to open it. If you are unable to locate your meter box key, please contact a member of the onsite GTC team at the incident control centre.

If you are confident that you’ve identified your own meter, you can now turn off your gas supply. To do this turn the emergency control valve a quarter turn either clockwise or anti clockwise, so that it’s at a right angle with the gas pipe. This will turn off your gas supply. There may be yellow tape on the gas pipe to guide you.

To help our engineers we need to know whether you have been able to turn off your gas supply. If you have been able to turn off your gas supply, please display the purple label, from your information leaflet, in your window or on your door, so it can be clearly seen by our engineers.

If you have been unable to turn off your gas supply, or you are unsure, please display the green label instead, and one of our engineers will visit you as soon as possible. Should you wish to verify the identity of our engineers, they will be carrying identification cards.

You should continue to leave your gas meter turned off until you are instructed otherwise.
