NEED HELP WITH YOUR METER?

If you have questions about your gas meter, meter box or related equipment, we’re here to help and support you.

It’s not always clear who is responsible for each part of the system, so this page explains who to contact and what to do if something needs repairing, relocating, removing or changing.

Whether you’re dealing with a damaged meter box, need your meter permanently disconnected, or you just want to know who looks after it, you’ll find clear guidance below to help you find the information you need.

A GTC engineer performs a gas meter removal as part of gas meter disconnection.

METER REMOVALS

Contact your gas supplier if you need your gas meter removed.

You’ll find their details on your energy bill.

When booked, an engineer will:

  • Turn off the gas supply at the Emergency Control Valve
  • Remove the gas meter
  • Fit a safety disc in the outlet pipework

The gas service pipe remains live after the meter is removed.

We’ll send a final meter reading to your gas supplier.

The Emergency Control Valve

The Emergency Control Valve (ECV) controls gas flow to your property.

Please do not turn off/on your own ECV unless specifically requested to via GTC (self-isolation and restoration).

The ECV is located by your gas meter.

HOW TO OPERATE THE EMERGENCY CONTROL VALVE

To turn off: turn the ECV a quarter turn either clockwise or anti clockwise, so that it’s at a right angle with the gas pipe. This will turn off your gas supply. There may be yellow tape on the gas pipe to guide you.

To turn on: turn the ECV a quarter turn either clockwise or anti clockwise so that it is in line with the gas pipe. This will turn on your gas supply.

You might hear a slight hissing noise as the meter re-pressurises – this is nothing to worry about.

If you smell gas, turn the emergency control valve off again and call the National Gas Emergency service on 0800 111 999 immediately.

Do not turn any of your appliances back on.
