FREE GAS METER INSPECTIONS & REGULATOR REPLACEMENTS
If your home is connected to a medium-pressure gas network operated by GTC, we carry out essential safety checks on your gas meter and regulator – completely free of charge.
These checks happen every 5 or 10 years, in accordance with national safety regulations, to ensure your gas supply remains safe and reliable.
If you’ve received a letter from us, there’s no need to worry. This is routine maintenance that we carry out for your safety.
WHY IS THIS WORK NEEDED?
We’re required under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations to maintain our equipment. For medium pressure networks, we follow British Standard 6400-2, which sets out that:
- Every 5 years – we carry out a visual inspection of your meter and regulator
- Every 10 years – we replace the gas regulator
HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH TYPE OF VISIT I AM DUE?
We’ll send you a letter confirming whether we’re carrying out a 5-year (Domreg) inspection or a 10-year (Domreg) regulator exchange. It will explain everything you need to know.
If you have any questions or want to reschedule? Email us on [email protected] or call us on 01359 308103 (Mon–Fri, 8:30am–5:00pm).
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
5-Year Domreg Inspection
Your inspection will be carried out by one of our qualified GTC engineers or our trusted contractors: Scotia Gas Care or Universal Gas Solutions. We’ll write to you with your inspection date.
If your gas meter is easily accessible, you don’t need to be at home. If it’s behind a locked gate or inside your property, please make sure someone is available – or get in touch to reschedule.
Our engineer will:
• Show ID and let you know they’re on-site
• Photograph the meter
• Check pressure and safety devices
• Inspect the regulator vent tube position
• Replace the Emergency Control Valve handle (if needed)
• Apply safety labels
• Highlight any gas safety concerns (if present)
No. Your gas supply will not be interrupted during this visit.
If we find that the meter is not our asset, or has been replaced by another Meter Equipment Manager, we won’t carry out the inspection.
10-Year Domreg Regulator Replacement
Every 10 years, the gas regulator must be exchanged as part of our safety programme. This visit includes all checks done during the 5-year inspection.
One of our GTC engineers or approved contractors will carry out the work. We’ll write to you with the proposed date.
Yes. We’ll need to temporarily switch off your gas supply to replace the regulator and relight your gas appliances safely inside your home.
If you’re unavailable:
• On the first visit, we’ll try again with notice.
• On the second visit, if still no access, we may need to isolate your gas supply for safety.
• You can call 01359 240363 (Option 1) to arrange for reinstatement once you’re home.
Our engineer will:
• Show ID and notify you on arrival
• Photograph your gas meter
• Temporarily turn off your gas
• Replace the regulator
• Check pressure and safety features
• Confirm vent tube compliance
• Update any required safety labels
• Address any gas safety concerns
• Reinstate your gas supply (if access provided)
Yes, but only temporarily – usually for 1 to 2 hours.
As with the 5-year check, we’ll need to stop work if the meter isn’t our asset.
